Corn Yield Calculator

Calculate grain and silage yields

Corn Yield Calculator

Estimate corn grain and silage yields accurately based on ear count, ear weight, and field measurements. This tool helps farmers predict harvest yields for better planning and decision-making.

How It Works

1Count ears per acre or enter total harvested weight
2Measure average ear weight for grain calculation
3Enter field area and moisture content
4Get instant yield estimates in bushels or tons

Pro Tips

  • Sample multiple areas of the field for more accurate estimates
  • Account for moisture content - standard is 15.5% for corn grain
  • Use the ear count method for pre-harvest estimates
  • Consider field variability and edge effects in calculations

Calculation Formulas

Ear Count Method (Grain Corn)
Yield (bu/acre) = (Ears/acre × Avg ear weight × 0.8) ÷ 56
• 0.8 = Shelling percentage (80% grain from ear)
• 56 = Standard bushel weight (lbs)
Total Weight Method
Yield (bu/acre) = (Total weight × (100-MC)%) ÷ (56 × 0.845)
• MC = Moisture content (%)
• 0.845 = Dry matter adjustment factor
Silage Yield Calculation
Silage (tons/acre) = Fresh weight × (1 - MC/100) × 1.13
• 1.13 = Conversion factor for whole plant silage
• Target moisture: 65-70% for optimal fermentation
Moisture Adjustment
Adjusted weight = Wet weight × ((100 - Current MC) ÷ (100 - Target MC))
• Standard grain moisture: 15.5%
• Field moisture typically: 20-30%

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the corn yield calculator?

Our calculator uses industry-standard formulas and provides estimates within 5-10% accuracy when proper sampling methods are used.

What's the difference between grain and silage calculations?

Grain calculations focus on dry matter content and bushel weight, while silage calculations consider total plant biomass and moisture content.

When should I use the ear count method?

Use ear count method for pre-harvest estimates. Count ears in multiple representative areas and measure average ear weight.

How do I account for field variability?

Sample multiple areas of the field, especially areas with different soil types or growing conditions, then average the results.

Why is the shelling percentage set at 80%?

The 80% shelling percentage represents the typical ratio of grain weight to total ear weight in mature corn, accounting for cob weight and moisture loss.

What factors affect corn yield calculations?

Key factors include plant population, ear size, kernel depth, test weight, moisture content, and environmental conditions during grain filling.

How is test weight used in yield calculations?

Test weight (lbs/bushel) indicates grain quality and density. Standard is 56 lbs/bushel, but actual test weight can vary from 52-62 lbs/bushel.

What's the optimal moisture for corn silage?

Optimal moisture for corn silage is 65-70% at harvest. This ensures proper fermentation and minimizes spoilage during storage.
